I own two watches made by Rolex. One is a Sea Dweller which looks like a Submariner but is a little thicker and does not have the cyclops magnifier over the date. First of all, Rolex watches are automatic watches that wind using the wearer's motion. They are not "mechanical" watches as G Cordes says in his review.

My SeaDweller is spot on accurate and has been since I got it in 2002. Never been serviced or calibrated and it doesn't gain or lose time. My Datejust ran exactly 2 minutes fast when I got it and after having it calibrated at Rolex in New York it runs very well. I live in NYC and simply walked into the Rolex building on 5th and 53rd and they calibrated it. They also will clean your watch for free if you go in and head upstairs.

Rolex watches are masterpieces and cannot be compared to Quartz watches. They are completely hand made by Rolex. For example, the case of the submariner, which is made at Rolex' own foundry, uses 904 grade steel that is used in industrial settings and the like. So what, right? Wrong. This steel will last and last and last. By contrast, Omega's dive watches use 316L steel which is much cheaper. No other watch manufacturer uses 904 grade steel.

Finally, a Rolex will never decrease in value. My Sea Dweller cost $4000 in 2002 and now sells new for $5375 just 5 years later. That's a 25% gain, less any depreciation due to wear.
