Kung Fu - The Complete First Season (1972)
He is a man of peace in a violent land. He is Kwai Chang Caine, schooled in the spirit-mind-body ways of the Shaolin priesthood by
the blind, avuncular Master Po and the stern yet loving master Kan. Caine speaks softly but hits hard. He lives humbly yet knows
great contentment. He is the Old West's most unusual hero. But hero is not a word Caine would use. He would simply say, "I am a
man."

Cannonball (1976)
Cannonball (1976)
Cannonball is 100% car-crashin', gas-guzzlin', tire-squealin', '70s-style fun courtesy of executive producer Roger Corman and
director Paul Bartel (Eating Raoul). Inspired by the success of Bartel's Death Race 2000, Corman commissioned him to direct this
down-and-dirty adventure comedy about an illegal transcontinental car race and the eccentrics who compete for its $100,000 prize.
Leading the pack is David Carradine, who's brought his sexy parole officer (Hill Street Blues' Veronica Hamel) along for the ride; hot
on his tail are scurrilous Bill McKinney (Deliverance), cult queen Mary Woronov, and a host of marvelous character actors. Bartel
also dots Cannonball with cameos by Corman, Sylvester Stallone, co-writer Don Simpson, and numerous fellow filmmakers like
Martin Scorsese, Joe Dante, and Allan Arkush, all of whom were in Corman's New World stable at the time. Undeniably lowbrow,
but also unquestionably exciting and far more entertaining than Burt Reynolds' Cannonball Run pictures (which borrowed wholesale
from this film), Cannonball offers plenty of thrills for cult movie enthusiasts. Blue Underground's DVD includes theatrical and TV
spots and bemused interviews with Carradine, Corman and Woronov. --Paul Gaita
Thunder and Lightning (1977)
Thunder and Lightning (1977)
Somebody's poisoned a whole truckload of Honey Dew, the South's favorite soft drink. Kate Jackson stars.
Circle of Iron (1978)
Circle of Iron (1978)
Bruce Lee and James Coburn conceived the story for this unusual blend of fantasy, martial arts adventure, and Zen mysticism that
should please cult-movie collectors and action aficionados with a taste for the offbeat. The bland but serviceable Jeff Cooper stars as
a lone warrior who sets out to find the mysterious Book of All Knowledge. He faces numerous physical challenges on his journey,
chief among them David Carradine in four roles (including a half-man, half-monkey), as well as numerous philosophical conundrums.
While the dialogue by Sterling Silliphant (In the Heat of the Night) and Stanley Mann (Eye of the Needle) occasionally teeters into
self-parody, the action and pace rarely lags, and the fine supporting cast, which includes Christopher Lee, Eli Wallach, and Roddy
McDowall, lends a degree of gravity to the proceedings. One wonders how the film would have played with Lee in the cast (it had
been a pet project of his for years, but was completed years after his death), but the end result is certainly watchable and entertaining.
Blue Underground's DVD includes a wealth of extras, including a typically laid-back interview with Carradine, commentary by
director Richard Moore, trailers and TV spots, an alternate title sequence, and, most intriguing of all, Lee's original script with
Coburn and Silliphant (accessible only via DVD-ROM). --Paul Gaita
Deathsport (1978)
Deathsport (1978)
After the success of the wicked little sci-fi satire Death Race 2000, producer Roger Corman quickly recast David Carradine, this time
as a rebel warrior in the year 3000 paired with B-movie vixen Claudia Jennings. The resulting mix of barbarians and bikers lacks the
inspired humor and satirical twist of its inspiration, but it works just fine as a drive-in action picture about gladiators on motorcycles
and bug-eyed mutant cannibals in second-rate makeup. Carradine gets to go all kung-fu and Jennings bares all in completely
gratuitous (and frankly bewildering) torture scenes, and for all their New-Agey philosophy mumbo jumbo, they rise to the occasion in
the gladiator ring (the deathsport of the title), where they pack in enough cycle stunts and fiery crashes to please an exploitation
junkie. --Sean Axmaker

Future Zone (1990)
Future Zone (1990)
David Carradine reprises his Future Force role as legendary bounty hunter John Tucker, who's about to face the most dangerous
ordeal of his career. But luckily, he's armed with his most powerful weapon yet--his grown son Billy, who has traveled back in time to
save him from the city's most brutal gang of criminals.
Bird on a Wire (1990)
Bird on a Wire (1990)
This action-comedy from 1990 makes the critical mistake of trying to mix a potentially suspenseful plot with the kind of humor that
Mel Gibson can only get away with in his Lethal Weapon movies. It doesn't work here because the movie's supposed to be a
Hitchcockian thriller and Mel's wisecracking--not to mention some implausible plot twists and ridiculous chase scenes--makes it
impossible to take any of this movie seriously. It works best as a lightweight vehicle for Gibson and Goldie Hawn, who bring their
own established appeal to their roles as old lovers who are reunited under unexpectedly dangerous circumstances. After testifying
against some drug-running killers, Mel's been safe under the protection of the FBI's witness relocation program, and Goldie
coincidentally enters his life again just as the bad guys are hot on Mel's trail. They join up and go on the run from the villains and ...
well, let's just say director John Badham doesn't have any big surprises up his sleeve. Goldie and Mel are enjoyable, as always, but
you'd have to be their biggest fan to watch this movie more than once. --Jeff Shannon
Last Stand At Saber River (1997)
Last Stand At Saber River (1997)
Tom Selleck shows a harder side of his persona as a disillusioned Confederate who returns home in the waning days of the Civil War
in this adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel. His wife, Suzy Amis, isn't ready to forgive him for leaving his family behind for the
"adventure" of war, and his children hardly remember him. Haunted by his actions in the war and caught in a power struggle in the
Arizona territory, Selleck's soul-scarred survivor makes a last stand to protect the only thing left that matters to him--his homestead
and his family. The film has its share of gunfights, showdowns, conspiracies, and Civil War rivalries, and even a runaway stagecoach,
but its power lies in the somber exploration of how misunderstandings and conflicts tear at a marriage during such a volatile time,
when ideals are set against duty to family. Director Dick Lowry's lean style makes the most of the gorgeous landscapes, and he
creates a strong dramatic tension in the bubbling undercurrent between Selleck, who leaves behind the jovial character of his Louis
L'Amour Westerns for a man hardened and embittered by war, and Amis, an excellent actress who brings to life a woman who
shoots, speaks her mind, and harbors resentment just as well as any brooding male hero. Keith and David Carradine costar as Union
wranglers who hold a grudge against the Confederate veteran. One of the most mature TV Westerns ever made. --Sean Axmaker
